We've been using these plant tags and markers for years and have had good results with them.  One of the advantages to using a tag that wraps around the plant stem is that you won't have problems with a rigid tag being broken off at ground level and then not being able to identify your plant.

These plastic "stick in the pot" plant tags are great for labeling potted plants or for use in propagation trays and beds where the longer lasting vinyl tags are not as convenient.  All three have very smooth writing surfaces for ease of labeling.  Be aware that these tags do tend to degrade and become brittle after a couple of years.  They will still be legible, but more easily broken.

These markers are as permanent as it gets.  The ink lasts and lasts without fading like a regular "permanent" marker.  Just be sure that your writing surface is clean and dry and you will be very happy with the results.
